Kristin Brinner Announces Candidacy for Solana Beach City Council District 2

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New democratic candidate eager to bring a fresh perspective on key issues affecting local community

SAN DIEGO, CA – Longtime Solana Beach resident Kristin Brinner has officially announced her candidacy for Solana Beach City Council, District 2. If elected, Brinner would be the first representative for the newly created District 2, bringing modern ideas and new energy to the Council.

“We are proud to launch this campaign as we strongly believe Kristin can make a tangible impact on several issues that affect Solana Beach residents,” said campaign manager and Solana Beach resident Shawna McGarry. “Many of the issues we face can be handled by a passionate, creative, proactive and driven leader like Kristin. I am confident Kristin would shine if given the opportunity to serve in this capacity for our community.”

As a part of her campaign, Brinner has announced she is primarily focused on the following:

  • Ensuring economic security for local businesses

  • Providing safe bicycle routes for children and families

  • Maintaining and creating vibrant community spaces

  • Offering safe and inviting transportation options for residents of all ages

  • Working to create inclusive housing solutions

  • Preserving beaches and historic neighborhoods within the city

“I am running because I believe I can make a difference and bring new energy to our City Council,” Brinner declared. “If elected, I would make sure the entire community felt heard and respected, regardless of their stance on certain issues. It’s imperative that we provide more opportunities for our residents to share their opinions, and action is taken to remedy their areas of concern.”

Committed to higher education, Brinner received her B.A. in Chemistry from Haverford College and went on to achieve her Ph.D. in Chemistry from University of California Berkeley. She moved to Solana Beach in 2011 with her husband Chris and immediately took to the vibrant culture, gorgeous beaches and strong local community. The couple and their 8-year-old daughter Kaitlyn are active residents who love to bike and walk around town, which has fueled Brinner’s passion for safe transportation options, particularly for school-aged children.

Brinner is a staunch advocate for environmental protection and makes it a point to give back to her community through volunteerism. She has been an active volunteer at the San Diego Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation where she currently serves as co-lead of the Beach Preservation Committee. In 2013, she was awarded Volunteer of the Year for the Chapter and in 2020 she earned the Outstanding Contributor Wavemaker Award by the National Surfrider Foundation.

“I am very passionate about protecting the San Diego coastline and regularly provide extensive written and oral public comment to cities throughout the county, as well as to the California Coastal Commission, regarding coastal development projects,” Brinner said. “If given the opportunity, I would leverage my experience in these volunteer roles at City Council, bringing the most recent and relevant data to the table for informed discussions about how to best protect our beaches.”

Brinner also served on the City of Del Mar's Sea Level Rise Technical Advisory Committee for four years. Here she and her fellow committee members were tasked with updating the city's Local Coastal Program in light of the imminent threats of climate change and sea level rise.

“With the support of our community, Kristin can take on this leadership position and effect positive change,” McGarry shared. “This campaign is rooted in our ability to come together and focus on our vibrant town, prioritizing housing and transportation options and abundant community spaces where everyone can thrive.”

Brinner is hosting a campaign launch party on Saturday, August 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. at La Colonia de Eden Gardens Park. The event is family-friendly and will include a bounce house for children. All are welcome to attend, and registration is open and requested.
